TMJ Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is an evidence based method of treating Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD). TMJD is the second most common cause of facial pain after dental disorders. Up to 20% of the population may be affected by TMJD
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull - problems with the joint can cause a range of symptoms including; facial pain, limited mouth opening, headaches, dizziness, muscle spasms and tension. Referred pain to the neck, shoulders and back. Hearing problems, tinnitus and blurred vision.
Physiotherapy for the TMJ can make a big improvement to these symptoms by improving mouth opening, reducing pain and relieving muscle tension.
Your appointment will include a verbal and physical assessment of your jaw, neck and overall posture. This will allow you to discuss your symptoms and for the cause of your pain to be identified. Your appointment will also include some treatment time, for massage, acupuncture, myofascial release and therapeutic exercise. This can include facial and intra-oral massage, passive stretching, trigger point therapy and myofascial techniques for the face, neck and shoulders. The exact treatment you receive will be adapted to your individual symptoms and preferences. Follow up appointments are then adapted based on your response to the first treatment and your needs at the time.
Please book 45 minutes or 1 hour for your first appointment.
