Oncology Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Oncology Manual lymphatic Drainage Massage is for those living with and recovering from cancer.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage encourages the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back towards the heart. The aim is to encourage the lymph fluid to move away from the swollen area, so it can drain normally. It also helps lymph fluid drain through the healthy lymph vessels, which helps control swelling.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage uses light pressure with long gentle rhythmic and repetitive strokes to increase the flow of lymph and reduce toxins within your body. Often referred to as a ‘Detox Massage’, this type of massage will help support your body’s internal filtration mechanisms and help to boost your immune system. The lymph system is part of your body's immune system and helps fight infection.
Surgery and medical conditions can cause lymph fluids to build up in your lymphatic system. Procedures that affect or remove your lymph nodes can cause lymphedema. Edema can happen anywhere in the body. It’s commonly seen in the hands, arms, feet, ankles and legs.
Manual lymphatic drainage can help to reduce the side effects of many types of cancer, surgery and lymph node removal. MLD treatments involve light, sweeping movements to direct lymph fluid back towards the lymph nodes, where it is reabsorbed into the lymphatic system, then returned to the circulatory system. Lymph fluid can be present as lymphedema, which is excess fluid in the tissues resulting from damage to or removal of the lymph nodes and vessels during cancer treatment. Manual lymphatic drainage can help to drain the lymphedema towards other non damaged lymph nodes for reabsorption. (MLD can only be used for lymphedema that does not "pit" or form a non rebounding dip in the skin when touched, it is not advised to treat pitting odema).
MLD can also help to manage the swelling that results from other surgery such as lumpectomy or mastectomy or reconstructions, which occurs due to the healing process once the skin wound has healed. it is a light and relaxing treatment and some people living with cancer may wish to have MLD purely for relaxation and wellbeing.
Those living with active cancer wishing to book an MLD treatment are advised to seek permission from their oncologist or specialist nurse before booking an appointment to ensure MLD is safe and appropriate for them.
